Our laboratory team works closely with clinicians to provide insights that support early detection, effective treatment planning, and personalized patient care.

Blood Tests for Liver, GI & Metabolic Health

1. Liver Function Tests (LFTs)

LFTs are a core group of blood tests used to evaluate liver health by measuring specific enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin levels. They help detect inflammation, liver injury, bile flow problems, and are essential for monitoring chronic liver diseases and treatment response.

  • Symptoms: ALT (SGPT), AST (SGOT), ALP, GGT, Total and Direct Bilirubin, Albumin, Total Protein
  • Indications: Suspected liver disease, jaundice, fatty liver, hepatitis, alcohol-related liver damage, monitoring chronic liver conditions
  • Diagnosis Role: Detects liver inflammation, obstruction of bile ducts, liver cell injury, and assesses overall liver function
  • Clinical Use: Routine screening, treatment monitoring, pre-operative evaluation, and follow-up of liver disorders
2. Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

A Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is an extensive blood test that evaluates overall metabolic health by measuring liver enzymes, kidney function markers, electrolytes, blood glucose, and essential proteins. It provides a broad overview of organ function and is particularly valuable in assessing liver disease, diabetes, and systemic conditions.

  • Parameters: ALT, AST, ALP, Bilirubin, Albumin, Total Protein, Blood Glucose, Creatinine, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate
  • Indications: Diabetes screening and monitoring, liver and kidney disease evaluation, electrolyte imbalance, routine health check-ups, chronic disease monitoring
  • Diagnosis Role: Detects metabolic imbalances, impaired liver or kidney function, abnormal blood sugar levels, and fluid-electrolyte disturbances
  • Clinical Use: Baseline health assessment, treatment monitoring, pre-operative evaluation, and ongoing management of metabolic and systemic disorders

Metabolic Syndrome & Related Tests

Given the strong link between metabolic syndrome and liver diseases such as MASLD, our lab includes key metabolic assessments:

  • Fasting Blood Glucose & HbA1c

Measures blood sugar control and screens for prediabetes and diabetes, key components of metabolic syndrome

  • Lipid Profile

Includes total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides—critical markers for cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome evaluation. Elevated triglycerides and low HDL are characteristic features

  • Other Metabolic Markers

Additional tests for metabolic risk evaluation may include:

  • Insulin / HOMA-IR for insulin resistance
  • hs-CRP for inflammatory status
  • Thyroid function (TSH) to rule out contributing endocrine disorders
These help provide a comprehensive picture of metabolic health
Laboratory Tests

Stool & Fecal Tests

    •  Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) / FIT

Detects hidden blood in the stool, a key screening tool in colorectal cancer prevention.(Marshall County Health Department)

    • Stool Culture & Microscopy

Detects bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections causing diarrhea and abdominal symptoms.(Marshall County Health Department)

    • Comprehensive Stool Analysis

Evaluates fat content, inflammation (e.g., fecal calprotectin), and pancreatic function markers like elastase—important for malabsorption and IBD assessment.(Marshall County Health Department)

Laboratory Tests

Clinical Scoring & Composite Indices

      • Fibrosis and Prognostic Scores
        • FibroTest / FibroSure is a composite score derived from multiple serum markers to estimate liver fibrosis non-invasively
      • MELD Na Score

Uses lab values including bilirubin, INR, creatinine, and sodium to assess severity and prognosis in advanced liver disease

Laboratory Tests

Specialized Serologic & Genetic Tests

      • Viral Hepatitis Panels

Comprehensive serology for Hepatitis A, B, C, and others, critical for diagnosis and treatment planning of liver infections.(NHLBI, NIH)

      • Autoimmune Markers

Include ANA, AMA, SMA, LKM, and immunoglobulin levels—used to diagnose autoimmune liver conditions like autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis.(NHLBI, NIH)

      • Genetic Testing

Used when hereditary conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease) are suspected or for complicated cases of early-onset GI disease.

Laboratory Tests

Pancreatic & Functional Tests

        • Pancreatic Enzyme Tests

Blood levels of enzymes such as amylase and lipase help detect pancreatitis and other pancreatic disorders.(Marshall County Health Department)

        • Pancreatic Function Tests

Assess pancreatic exocrine function using markers like pancreatic elastase to diagnose insufficiency and guide enzyme replacement therapy.
