Endoscopic Polypectomy

Safe and Effective Removal of Gastrointestinal Polyps

What is Endoscopic Polypectomy?

Endoscopic Polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to identify and remove abnormal tissue growths (polyps) from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, primarily the colon and stomach. Polyps are usually benign (non-cancerous) but can develop into cancer over time. Early detection and removal are crucial for preventing complications, including colorectal cancer.

At Central Gastro, we specialize in advanced endoscopic techniques to safely and effectively remove polyps, helping you maintain optimal digestive health.

Why is Endoscopic Polypectomy Needed?

Polyps often do not cause symptoms, but some may lead to complications if left untreated. Your doctor may recommend endoscopic polypectomy if:

  • Colon Polyps or Adenomas are found during a colonoscopy or other screening tests.
  • You experience GI bleeding due to polyps.
  • You have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.
  • Polyps are detected in the stomach or upper digestive tract during an endoscopy.

Endoscopic polypectomy is both diagnostic and therapeutic: it removes polyps and allows the tissue to be examined for signs of cancer.

How is Endoscopic Polypectomy Performed?

  1. Preparation
    • For colon polyp removal, you will need to follow bowel preparation instructions to clean out your colon. For upper GI polyps, fasting for 6–8 hours is required.
    • Detailed pre-procedure guidelines will be provided.
  2. Procedure
    • A flexible, lighted tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth (for stomach polyps) or the rectum (for colon polyps).
    • Once the polyp is located, it is removed using special instruments, such as a snare and electrosurgery equipment. A small electrical current or clips may be applied to prevent bleeding.
    • The procedure is performed under sedation to ensure your comfort.
  3. Recovery
    • Endoscopic polypectomy is typically an outpatient procedure. After a short recovery, you can return home the same day.
    • Most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours.

Benefits of Endoscopic Polypectomy

  • Minimally Invasive: No incisions or surgery are required.
  • Cancer Prevention: Early polyp removal reduces the risk of colorectal and gastric cancers.
  • Quick Recovery: Short recovery time with minimal discomfort.
  • Accurate Diagnosis: Removed polyps are sent for histological analysis to detect any abnormal or cancerous changes.

Who Should Undergo Endoscopic Polypectomy?

You may be a candidate for endoscopic polypectomy if you:

  • Are undergoing a screening colonoscopy and polyps are detected.
  • Have a history of polyps or are at higher risk for colorectal cancer.

Routine screening is recommended for individuals over the age of 45 or earlier if you have risk factors, such as family history or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Post-Procedure Care: Mild bloating or cramping is normal and resolves quickly.
  • Follow-Up: You will be advised about the results of the polyp analysis and whether additional screenings are needed.
  • Long-Term Surveillance: Depending on the type, size, and number of polyps, we will create a tailored screening schedule to monitor your digestive health.
