Small Bowel Enteroscopy

Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment for Small Bowel Disorders

What is Small Bowel Enteroscopy?
Small Bowel Enteroscopy is a specialized endoscopic procedure that allows detailed examination of the small intestine. It is used to diagnose and sometimes treat conditions affecting this often hard-to-reach part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

At [Your Clinic Name], we offer cutting-edge enteroscopy techniques to ensure accurate diagnosis and provide effective treatment for small bowel conditions, delivering expert care tailored to your needs.

Why is Small Bowel Enteroscopy Performed?

Small Bowel Enteroscopy is recommended to investigate and manage a variety of small intestine-related conditions, including:

  • Unexplained Gastrointestinal Bleeding
  • Small Bowel Tumors or Polyps
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease
  • Malabsorption Disorders
  • Celiac Disease Evaluation
  • Intestinal Obstructions or Narrowing (Strictures)
  • Suspected Foreign Bodies

If other diagnostic tools, such as capsule endoscopy, indicate a problem in the small bowel, Small Bowel Enteroscopy provides a more detailed evaluation and therapeutic options.

Types of Small Bowel Enteroscopy

We use the latest techniques to access and evaluate the small intestine effectively:

  1. Single-Balloon Enteroscopy
    • A flexible endoscope with a balloon system allows navigation deep into the small bowel for diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Double-Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE)
    • An advanced technique utilizing two balloons to guide the endoscope further into the small intestine for thorough evaluation.
  3. Spiral Enteroscopy ( Now withdrawn by the manufacturer to resolve some technical issues)
    • A special motorized spiral overtube helps advance the endoscope efficiently into the small bowel.

These techniques allow us to perform both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions during the same procedure.

What Happens During the Procedure?

  1. Preparation
    • You will need to fast for at least 8 hours prior to the procedure. Detailed instructions will be provided during your consultation.
  2. Procedure
    • Sedation or anesthesia will be administered for your comfort.
    • The endoscope is carefully guided through the digestive tract to examine the small intestine. If necessary, therapeutic actions such as biopsies, polyp removal, or control of bleeding can be performed.
  3. Recovery
    • The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis. After a short recovery period, you will be able to go home the same day with post-procedure care instructions.

What Can Small Bowel Enteroscopy Treat?

In addition to diagnosing small bowel disorders, the procedure can be used to:

  • Remove polyps or small tumors
  • Take biopsies for pathology
  • Control bleeding with techniques like cauterization or clipping
  • Dilate strictures (narrowed areas) in the small intestine
  • Retrieve foreign objects

Benefits of Small Bowel Enteroscopy

  • Minimally Invasive: Provides a safe and effective alternative to surgery for many small bowel issues.
  • Comprehensive Visualization: Enables detailed examination of the small intestine that cannot be reached with standard endoscopy.
  • Therapeutic Intervention: Combines diagnosis and treatment in one procedure for efficient care.
