Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation
Safe and Effective Treatment for Esophageal Narrowing
What is Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation?
Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation is a minimally invasive procedure used to widen narrowed areas (strictures) in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. Narrowing of the esophagus can make swallowing difficult and uncomfortable, leading to symptoms like food getting stuck, chest discomfort, or regurgitation.
At Central Gastro, we use advanced endoscopic techniques to safely and effectively treat esophageal strictures, helping you eat, drink, and live more comfortably.
Why is Esophageal Dilation Needed?
Esophageal strictures can occur due to various conditions, including:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Chronic acid reflux can cause inflammation and scarring, narrowing the esophagus.
- Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE): An allergic condition causing inflammation and narrowing of the esophagus.
- Esophageal Cancer or Tumors: Growths that obstruct the esophagus.
- Achalasia: A motility disorder where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax.
- Swallowed Foreign Objects or Injuries: Damage caused by ingestion of harmful substances or trauma.
- Post-Surgical Scarring: Narrowing resulting from previous esophageal surgery.
Symptoms of Esophageal Narrowing
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may benefit from esophageal dilation:
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Sensation of food getting stuck in the chest or throat
- Pain or discomfort when swallowing
- Frequent regurgitation of food
- Unexplained weight loss due to eating difficulties
- Chronic acid reflux
How is Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation Performed?
The procedure is quick, effective, and performed under sedation for your comfort:
- Preparation
- You will need to fast for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure.
- Sedation or anesthesia will be administered to keep you relaxed and comfortable.
- Procedure
- A thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth to access the esophagus.
- Once the narrowing is identified, one of the following dilation methods is used:
- Balloon Dilation: A balloon is inflated at the site of the stricture to stretch and widen the esophagus.
- Bougie Dilation: A tapered, flexible tube is passed through the stricture to gently widen the narrowed area.
- The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes.
- Recovery
- You will be monitored until the sedation wears off and can usually return home the same day.
- Mild throat discomfort or slight bloating may occur but resolves quickly.
Benefits of Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation
- Minimally Invasive: No incisions; performed endoscopically.
- Quick Relief: Immediate improvement in swallowing and comfort.
- Outpatient Procedure: Same-day recovery with minimal downtime.
- Safe and Effective: Proven treatment for esophageal strictures.
What to Expect After the Procedure
- You may experience mild throat soreness for a day or two.
- Start with soft foods and liquids, gradually returning to your normal diet.
- Follow-up appointments may be necessary, depending on the cause of the narrowing. Some conditions, like GERD or EoE, may require ongoing management to prevent recurrence.
